For many the Zune is merely an “iPod” from a different company – not so. Microsoft has turned out a wonderful device that stands perfectly well on its own, thank you very much. The Zune is very obviously a well planned and robust portable media player for those who take their portable media seriously, providing all the storage one could want (currently up to 120GB); a large, rich, bright screen protected by strong scratch resistant glass; clear, clean audio output for a quality difference you can hear; tough, mar resistant housing; the list goes on.
On a personal note, I’ve been carrying my Zune 120 around in my back pocket (without a protective case) for well over a year now. It goes literally everywhere I go, never left behind under any circumstances. Three times it has been dropped – once on decking, once on asphalt, and once straight into a toilet bowl (it’s OK – it was clean at the time). It has survived all of these, plus all of the regular wear & tear with no apparent difficulty. Even the fall on pavement did not leave a scratch.
I often work long hours, many times in the dusty environments of the workshop. The Zune provides all my audio needs whether I’m building cabinets or painting doors. Though some may knock the Zune’s battery life, and with its larger than average screen there are others out there that doubtless outperform in this category, my Zune has never left me stranded, once going so far as to provide me with 16 straight hours of non-stop MP3 playback on a single charge. And when I finally quit for the day it was I who blinked first – the Zune still had power in the tank. Who knows how much longer it would’ve gone?
My point is this: if you want a player that will last long enough to begin to feel more like a trusted friend than a disposable toy this is where the Zune shines. Many still use their Zune 30’s (1st gen.) and 80’s (2nd gen.) everyday with no problems. They’re even running the latest firmware, just like the brand new ones. They didn’t need to buy the latest offering to get the latest feature set… if you catch my meaning.
